Aluvihara Rock Cave Temple
The Aluvihare Rock Temple is inextricably linked to the preservation of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, for it is here that its most sacred beliefs, known as the Dhamma, were codified and written down.
What had been an oral tradition memorized and passed on down the generations by word of mouth was committed to strips of specially prepared palm leaves to ensure its integrity.
The result, the Tipitaka or P?li Canon, which is now the standard collection of scriptures in the Theravadan Buddhist tradition, is the first known and most complete early Buddhist canon.
The temple includes a golden Buddha offering protection atop a rocky outcrop 150m above the monastery, and sweeping views of the surrounding valley.
