Avukana Buddha Statue

Carved from a large granite rock face during the 5th century, this huge and imposing monolith is one of the best examples of standing Buddha statues in ancient Sri Lanka. Another similar statue at Sasseruwa, close to Avukana, gave rise the legend that they are the result of a competition between a master stone-mason and one of his pupils. The fact that the master finished the Avukana statue first, and thus won the competition, is said to be the reason why the Sasseruwa statue appears to be unfinished.
