Barberyn Island Lighthouse

Barberyn is one of four international lighthouses in Sri Lanka, and in 2000 was upgraded with a sophisticated GPS positioning system that connects all the island’s lighthouses. The 112ft white granite tower is perched atop a 20ft cliff on Barberyn Island, just off the coast. Says the online Lighthouse Digest: “Beruwela or Barberyn Lighthouse is located in one of the most breathtaking places in Sri Lanka. “When the Arabs landed in the coastal town centuries ago, they docked their boats here. ‘Be’ in the local Sinhala language means ‘unloaded’, and ‘Ruwela’ means ‘catamaran’. Hence ‘Beruwela’ is derived to mean ‘where the sail boats were unloaded’.”
