Bodhi Temple

This small and modest Buddhist temple next to the Dutch Market on Galle Fort’s bustling main street is dominated by a sacred Bodhi tree, and is much appreciated for its calm and tranquil atmosphere. Many visitors to the town, Buddhist and non-Buddhist alike, take time out at the temple to rest and recuperate after a busy morning sight-seeing among the town’s other tourist attractions. The temple’s ancient ceiling murals were sadly badly damaged by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and are subject to ongoing restoration.
