Galle fort light house

Galle Lighthouse is the oldest of Sri Lanka’s 14 lighthouses, although the original was destroyed by fire and rebuilt on the ramparts at what is known as the Point Utrecht Bastion. A notable landmark on Galle Fort’s southern promontory, the lighthouse is a popular meeting place for visitors and residents alike, and local children can often be seen flying their kites around its base. With it unobstructed line-of-sight across the harbor, the lighthouse was a vital navigational aid for ships in the days before GPS, and as such did much to promote the town’s fortunes as a thriving ocean-going trading center.
