Galmaduwa temple kandy

Legend abounds with explanations of why this temple was not finished, the most popular being that the builder, King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe, lost interest after the discovery of a cave complex at Degaldoruwa. Be that as it may, this impressive building was never actually used as a temple, and remains basically a stone and brick pavilion with a high gopuram, which is attributed to Tamil-Hindu influences. J.P Lewis, a well-known amateur historian living in Sri Lanka in the early 1900s, says that “the Galmaduwa Viharaya probably enjoys the unique distinction of being the most Hindu-looking Buddhist temple in existence”.
