Nissanka Latha Mandapaya

The stone columns Nissanka Latha Mandapaya—not straight, but curved in three places—are a unique feature of the ruins of Polonnaruwa and their sacred architectural heritage. This impressive monumental structure was built by King Nissanka Malla (1187–1196), and according to a nearby stone inscription, it was used for the chanting of Buddhist scriptures. According to leading Sri Lankan archaeologist Senarath Paranavithana, the building’s columns are the best known examples of this feature of ancient Sri Lankan architecture.
