Pedro Tea Estate
Of the many tea plantations surrounding Nuwara Eliya, the Pedro estate is perhaps the best known and most accommodating.
They are more than happy to give guided tours to parties or individuals, and will proudly show of the factory, built in 1885 and still packed with 19th-century engineering.
Pedro tea is renowned for its light and delicate flavor much favoured in Europe and Japan. In 2013 its ‘Lovers Leap’ brand, associated with the nearby waterfall of the same name, set a record price per kilo.
Which is appropriate, for the Pedro estate was the first and only tea garden owned by James Taylor, the pioneer of tea industry in Sri Lanka.
