Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, near the town of Kegalle, provides a truly unique opportunity to get close to these magnificent animals during their daily communal river bath, and to take part in bottle-feeding the babies.

Some of the more mature orphans are gifted to zoos around the world, while others are presented to Buddhist temples in in Sri Lanka for religious duties, when they will be dressed in bright, traditional caparisons and paraded.
