Sri Ponnambalam Vanesar Kovil
The architectural purity and spirituality of the sacred Sri Ponnambalam Vanesar Kovil Hindu temple in Colombo brings devotees from all over the country to pay their respects to Lord Shiva, its presiding deity.
Built entirely of granite by Gate Mudaliyar Arunachalam Ponnambalam in 1857, it conforms to the ancient vastu rules governing the building of temples.
Although simple in its conception, even minimalist when compared with many Hindu temples, its imposing size and understated grandeur, both inside and out, command awe and respect in equal measure.
It is also well maintained and cared for, perhaps due to the fact that it remains in the control of the founding family trust.
