St Peter's Church
One of the oldest Colombo buildings, St Peter’s Church—known as the seafarers church, with the International Mission to Seafarers next door—is also one of the most beautiful and inspiring.
Directly opposite the port, it was almost completely sealed off as a security measure during Sri Lanka’s 30-year insurrectionist war, and suffered considerable corporeal and spiritual neglect.
But with the war over, for the Anglican community in Colombo, the church once again became an accessible and much-treasured sanctuary of peace and contemplation.
And for the non-religious amongst us it is also a haven of tranquility a mere stones’s throw from the noise, hustle and bustle of the city centre. Highly recommended.
