Stilt fishing
Perched on poles above the surface of the sea, stilt fishermen are an enduring and picturesque testament to man’s ingenuity—and patience!
Sitting still as statues for long hours at dawn and dusk, one hand holding the fishing pole, the other holding the stilt, they dangle their hooks among the shoals of small fish that gather in the surf.
This traditional practice nearly died out after the tsunami that ravished one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful coastlines, but the custom was resurrected, thanks to popular demand. A sight not to be missed.
