Talangama Wetland
The 70 species of birds that live and breed on the Talangama Wetland are a testament to Sri Lanka’s determination to preserve its bio-diversity and promote eco-tourism throughout the island.
One of the wetland’s most memorable experiences is watching the early morning, pre-dawn departure of tree-roosting water birds such as the Glossy Ibis as they head for their feeding grounds.
They mix and mingle with Black Crowned Night Herons, which, being nocturnal, are returning to their roosts after spending the night scavenging for tiddlers around the water’s edge.
Being able to observe over 100 species of birds in one place, particularly one so close to Colombo city, is a tribute to the vision and foresight that understood how important it is as an educational and recreational resource.
