Weherahena Buddhist Temple
Standing before this monumental seated Buddha statue as it gazes down from within its roofed and terraced temple house evokes all the calm and peace of Sri Lanka’s great religious tradition.
Compared to some of the magnificent stupas and temples to be found the Cultural Triangle, this otherwise unremarkable religious edifice might seem nothing special.
But persevere, because its unique feature is a 600 tunnel which, completed in 1976, is decorated along its whole length with various scenes from Jataka tales about the previous lives of the Buddha, in both human and animal form.
