Yatagala Raja Maha Viharaya
The Yatagala Raja Maha Viharaya Buddhist temple, a favourite of Sri Lanka’s ancient kings, is today renowned as a particularly serene and peaceful place of worship and contemplation.
Dating back to the Anuradhapura period, its rock garden and sacred caves, which contain Buddhist statues and imagery, includes the much-revered Sri Maha Bodhi Tree.
The temple, now an official Sacred Area, includes The Cavern, which is formed by four massive granite boulders and contains the Samadhi Buddha Statue in what is now a Meditation Hall.
