St. Thomas Chapel

This historic place of Christian worship in Colombo is renowned for its amazing mural of the transfiguration, which was created by renowned Sri Lankan artist David Paynter. But it is also the chapel of what is arguably the country’s most prestigious educational establishment, a selective boys' private Anglican school that counts four Sri Lankan prime ministers amongst its alumni. St Thomas College in upscale Mount Lavinia was founded in 1851 by the first Bishop of Colombo, whose vision was a college and cathedral for the new Diocese of Colombo, with a mission to training Christian clergy and ‘make children good citizens under the discipline and supervision of Christianity’.
