Kandy Perehara with Sun, Sea and Sand

You will be met by your driver guide at the airport and transfer to Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel in Colombo for your first night’s stay in a superior city-view room.

Today morning you may proceed to Kandy. En-route visit the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Garden and evening witness the Kandy Esala Perehara. This last bastion of Sri Lanka’s last Sinhala king, Kandy is now our second city. Surrounded by lush landscapes and tea plantations, tucked into a verdant valley fringed bymountains, Kandy is one of Sri Lanka’s eight UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Esala Perehara pageant is a spectacular parade of brilliantly caparisoned elephants, drummers, traditional dancers, fire jugglers and more, all to the sound of traditional drums and accompaniments. Lasting for five days, the Esala Perahara comprises the Kumbal Perahera, which is dedicated to the four guardian Hindu gods, Natha, Vishnu, Katharagamaand Pattini, and then the Randoli Perahera, when palanquins are added for colour and glamour. An early breakfast before heading east, a journey of four hours to reach Passikudha, renowned for one of the longest stretches of coastal shallows in the world, where you can walk out to sea for several kilometers. After breakfast, leave for the 30-minute drive to Batticaloa, a pretty island city surrounded by a languorous lagoon and known locally as ‘the land of the singing fish’. Visit the Dutch Fort: Known as the old Dutch Fort, it was actually was built by the Portuguese in 1628, and captured by the Dutch 10 years later. Its square structure with four bastions is bordered on two sides by the lagoon, and was used by British from 1745. Watch prawn fishermen in action: You can even try your hand at catching some yourself, and if successful, the hotel chef will be happy to add them to your lunch! Lunch at Hotel East Lagoon. Visit the city and see the local life: A leisurely stroll to take in the sights, including local markets that sell fish, meat, fruit and vegetables produced by the local farmers. Return to Passikudha for your barbecue on the beach. Overnight stay at the hotel.

The beach is just 10 minute’s walk from your hotel, and we recommend lunch at Roys beachside restaurant, in particular the crab curry, beef poriyal, dhal curry and mouthwatering authentic Batti food. Rest of the day at leisure.
