Tangalle Sri Lanka

Tangalle is a big town in Hambantota District, Southern Province, Sri Lanka, governed by an Urban Council. It is one of the largest towns in southern province. It is located 195 km south of Colombo and 35 km east of Matara.

Attractions in Tangalle

Mulkirigala Rock Monastery

The Rock of Mulkirigala rises about 676 feet from the surrounding land mass. There are seven cave temples situated in five Terraced areas of different altitudes. They are the Lower Terrace (Patha Maluwa), Bo Tree Terrace ( Bodhi Maluwa). Great King's Temple Terrace ( Raja Maha Vihara Maluwa), Upper Bo Tree Terrace (Uda Bodhi Maluwa) and Chetiya Terrace (Chaitya Maluwa). These terraces can be accessed comfortably through well paved granite paths and steps going right upto the Dagoba Terrace. Situated in Giruwa Pattu of Hambanthota District of Southern Sri Lanka, Mulkirigala is also called as Mulgirigala but the former is more prominently used at present. There are many earlier names used for this rock temple such as 'Samudda Pabbatha", 'Muhunadra Giri', 'Muhudu Giri', 'Giriba Vehera', 'Giriba Lena', 'Dhakkina Giri', 'Dakkina Pabbatha', 'Muwatirigala', 'Mukirigalla' and 'Mulangiriya'.

Madunagala Hermitage

The Madunagala Hermitage (also referred as Madunagala Temple) is situated a few miles away from Ambalantota, in the jungle. The journey takes about 30 minutes along the tarred road. A red dirt road leads to the temple about 12.5 kilometres away. The road winds in all directions and is joined frequently by other roads and choosing the correct road is near impossible for someone without a guide. Thick scrub jungle with thorny bushes, cacti and stunted trees dot the landscape. The land is dry due to poor rainfall even though the soil is rich. It’s impossible to see far on either side of the road since cacti and the bushes crowd thickly together.

Goyambokka Beach

Made up of a sequence of beautiful rocky caves, the twin bays to the west of Tangalle town in Goyambokka & Pallikaduwa are picturesque upmarket villages in sharp contrast with the flatter coastline to the north. Some guesthouses, located on the hillsides with spectacular sea views, have their own private access to individual beaches of rich sand.

Medaketiya Beach

The safest place for swimming is in Medaketiya, where most of the budget accommodation is located along a beach road lined with guest houses. From here, in the shelter of over hanging palms is an ideal stretch beach for relaxation with a fine view of the harbour, many fishing boats & shimmering sea.

Medilla Beach

This stretch of palm fringed beach is the most enticing. There are shelves of rocks & coral in the sea, visible from the shore, which create pockets of safe swimming. A natural swimming pool past Nature Resort is safe most of the time for swimming.

Mawella Beach

Mawella, 6km west of Tangalla, this stretch of beach is coastline's best-kept secret. Away from the busy main road, the 3km long, very wide beach offers safe swimming.
