Classic Sri Lanka Tour

No visit to Sri Lanka would be complete without seeing the best of our renowned Cultural Triangle, where Buddhism first flourished, and our famed Hill Country, home to our iconic Ceylon tea plantations.

Dambulla and its revered cave temples, and the equally spectacular Sigiriya Rock Fortress, are also special highlights, as are the celebrated elephant orphanage at Pinnawela and Minneriya National Park, one of our foremost wildlife reserves.

To appreciate the simple life, a walk in Hiriwaduna will put you in touch with farmers and fishermen, and give you the chance to sample some of our best seafood and home-grown vegetables.
And on that note, a visit the Royal Botanical Gardens will acquaint you with some of our 4,000 species of plants and herbs, many of the them staples of our rich and varied cuisine.

Day 2

Negombo | Pinnawala | Dambulla
Classic Sri Lanka Tour
After breakfast you will proceed to Dambulla. If any one place can be called the cradle of civilization in Sri Lanka, it is this. Doubly significant, this hugely important historical and cultural site is also where Buddhism gained its first footholds. The region’s prehistory is dated in part from a burial site near the Dambulla caves complex. This highlights the development of at least one indigenous civilization long before the arrival of Indian influences, and thus Buddhism. En-route you will visit the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, where you will see—and maybe take part in—the feeding and bathing of the young elephants. The orphanage is a nursery and breeding ground for wild Asian elephants, and was founded to care for and protect the many un-weaned wild youngsters found abandoned in Sri Lanka.

Day 3

Dambulla | Sigiriya
Classic Sri Lanka Tour
After breakfast you will climb the Sigiriya Rock, or Lion Rock, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses the ancient ‘fortress in the sky’ on its topmost plateau. This site, the most visited historic site in Sri Lanka, according to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Culavamsa, was chosen by King Kasyapa (477–495 CE) for his new capital. He built his palace on the top, and decorated its sides with colorful frescoes. In the evening you will visit Minneriya National Park for an evening safari. The park is a renowned eco-tourism wildlife reserve of mixed evergreen forest and scrub. Centered on the Minneriya Tank, a huge reservoir, it is home to leopards, elephants and sambar deer.

Dambulla | Kandy
Classic Sri Lanka Tour
After breakfast you will drive to Kandy. This historic Buddhist centre surrounded by rolling hills and forest was the last capital of the Singhalese Kingdom, and is famed for the Temple of the Tooth, home to a revered Buddha relic. In the evening, after a stroll around the town, you will visit the temple, and witness a traditional Sri Lankan cultural dance performance. En-route to Kandy you will visit the Dambulla Cave Temples, perhaps the heart and soul of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Built on a massive rock that towers 520ft (160m) over the surrounding plains, it is the largest and best preserved such temple complex in the country. Spread over five caves, this UN World Heritage Site includes 153 Buddha statues, three of Sri Lankan kings, and four of gods and goddesses, including the Hindu gods Vishnu and Ganesh. Later you will visit one of the spice gardens in Matale, which are among the best on the island. Meet the different spices and enjoy a delightful stroll in fragrant greenery as you learn about nutmeg, pepper vines, clove trees and curry, cinnamon and the precious cardamom, a relative of ginger.

Classic Sri Lanka Tour
After breakfast, proceed to Nuwara Eliya. The town and surrounding countryside offer many activities for tourists, including visits to tea plantations, golf, horse riding, boating, hiking and exploring the beauty of the landscaped gardens, waterfalls and plateaus. A visual treat is Devon Falls, a spectacular 300ft waterfall named after a pioneer English coffee planter. This, and a chain of lesser falls, are fed by a river that was dammed upstream to create the Kotmale hydro-electric project.
