Bentota Sri Lanka

Love is in the air at Bentota, perhaps our finest beach resort and favourite honeymoon and wedding destination for Sri Lankans and foreign visitors alike.
As well as its golden beaches, the resort’s calm seas during the peak holiday season are perfect for sailing, snorkeling, diving, water-skiing, wind surfing and sea fishing on traditional outrigger canoes.
Bentota Bay Beach is the prime attraction of the government-sponsored National Holiday Resort Complex, which was designed by renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa in the 1970s.
Lying between Galle Road and the Colombo-Galle-Matara railway, the complex includes shopping arcades, a range of luxury hotels, and all the facilities that holidaymakers expect from a top resort on Sri Lanka’s renowned south-west coast.
These feature a shopping arcade where visitors can find that perfect memento of their visit, including traditional drums and masks, handmade lace and much more, plus an open-air theatre that stages regularly shows of folk and mask dancing.
With tourism and hospitality booming on this Indian Ocean paradise island, more and more effort is being made to ensure that foreign and domestic visitors enjoy the vacation of a lifetime.
The town centers on the picturesque lagoon where the River Bentara flows into the sea, and which hosts a wide choice of activities, including jet-skiing, windsurfing, parasailing and romantic river safaris.
A favorite activity is scuba and snorkel diving from Bentota Beach. Its warm and placid waters are a center for all the support services a hard-core diver can expect, including Professional Association of Diving (PADI) instructors.
Things to do in Bentota must include a visit to the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery and turtle-watching project run by the Turtle Conservation Project (TCP) in partnership with the Wildlife Department of Sri Lanka.
You can also visit Bevis Bawa's Brief Garden at the former home of the late renowned landscape architect and brother of famed Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey.
Meanwhile, the historic Galapatha Raja Maha Vihare Buddhist temple, with its stone inscriptions, carvings, pillars and ponds, is also very much worth a visit.
